Black pudding hailed as a 'superfood'

Fry-up fans have something to cheer about in 2016 - the humble black pudding is now being hailed as a 'superfood' thanks to its nutritional benefits.
Writing for the Daily Mail, journalist Anucyia Victor has drawn up a list of 16 foods she predicts will be 'huge' in 2016, including black beans, seaweed, avocado oil - and breakfast staple black pudding.
"Loaded with protein, potassium, calcium and magnesium, as well as being practically carb free, it is expected to fly off the shelves," she writes.
"It's also rich in iron and zinc - two minerals frequently missing from modern diets. Iron is needed to make healthy blood cells and prevent anaemia."
Darren Beale from MuscleFood.com said: "2015 saw healthy eating reach a new level and this year we predict this trend is only going to get bigger.
"It's been interesting to note how people are changing their habits depending on the new buzz words in clean eating."
Some of the foods have been on the up for a while like avocado oil and maca root, but others like mushrooms and black pudding have been a total surprise to us.
"It's great to have this new research available to find out the hidden qualities in food and we can't wait to see how these new trends take off."
At least one butcher claims to have seen a boom in sales. Lorna Maclennan, director of Stornoway's Charles Macleod Butchers’ shop, told the Stornoway Gazette: “We have had a surge in the number of people ordering their black puddings direct, January is usually quiet, but we have had 100 orders with more coming in all the time.”
The shop has seen a rise in interest in the product since Stornoway's black pudding was awarded Protected Geographical Indication in 2013. Lorna added: “It’s been a staple on the kitchen table throughout the Hebrides for many years, it’s now good to see its benefits being recognised.”
